How to simplify the holidays to reduce stress and bond with our kids

By the time of Thanksgiving, many of us are anxious about the winter holidays. It can be difficult to separate duty and responsibility from our natural awareness of what our children need and what we want during this hectic season.

The holidays become a chore you "must do" instead of time with loved ones. However, simplifying the holidays can perhaps add greater delight to the experience.

How to simplify the holidays:

  • Prioritize your priorities. The first step in simplifying the holidays is determining your top priorities. Take some time to determine what you value most throughout the holiday season.

  • Adjust your expectations. Changing expectations and perspectives can simplify the holidays. Avoid an Instagram-perfect holiday season. It's unrealistic and will leave you tired and frustrated. Focus on your priorities and what matters most to you.

  • Simplify your holiday traditions. Sit down with your family and list the holiday traditions you love. Then make time for it and let go of traditions you don't care about.

  • Keep cooking and baking simple. Simple meals or potlucks might reduce holiday stress. Simplifying meals can free up time to spend with loved ones.

  • Simplify buying gifts. Buying fewer gifts for kids can simplify the holidays.

  • De-clutter before and/or after the holidays. De-cluttering before and/or after the holidays can also help prevent seasonal clutter. You won't be overwhelmed by holiday gifts or have a cluttered home if you start with fewer.

Whether you're decorating the Christmas tree, baking cookies, or making gifts for grandma, remember that the process is more important for your child than the outcome. Keep it simple, and you and your child will enjoy it more.
